What is branding?

When starting a business, it is essential for people to think about branding. In fact, they will soon discover that it is quite hard to start a business without it. Yet, a lot of people still don’t understand what branding actually is, nor do they realise the value that good branding can add to a business.

So, what is branding?

A logo? Something to put on a t-shirt? A memorable symbol so people can quickly recognise the brand?

While all these things are all part of a brand, they are only part of a visual brand. Yes, a branding process will give you a logo, something to put on a shirt (or wherever else you need to put it), and if done well, it will give you a recognisable symbol, but a brand is so much more than just the little visual graphic that people associate with branding.

Branding is the message being told through all written, visual, and oral communication.

What if I told you that you are constantly branding? Through every conversation, every text, every phone call, every letter, brochure, email, smile, expression, or gesture, you are always branding. It’s much more than a list of services, a name, logo, website, or great looking business card.

Branding is the message being told through all written, visual, and oral communication. It reflects one’s identity and character, but when branding isn’t considered or when visual brands aren’t created well, these messages can quite easily be lost or can be miscommunicated. Through all means of communication, opinions are formed about a person or entity, so, it is important to make sure you’re communicating (or branding) the right message!
